During the elaborate research phase, a reduction of tanning time on lab scale from 30 to 5 hours could be proved under equal test conditions (size of skin samples, equipment, chrome content of tanning solution etc.), when using compressed carbon dioxide as process intensifier. The quality was assessed by measuring the chrome content with the help of emission spectrometry.

Since 2006 the technology has been scaled up from lab scale to technical and pre-industrial scale, resulting in the same percentage of time saving. This means that Cleantan^® doesn’t only use far less chemicals than conventional tanning, but is also a lot faster.
